A Closer Look At The Primary Health Concerns Facing The Youth Of Kenya

Health & Medical Blog

Along the Indian ocean, the country of Kenya is situated and is called home by about 48 million residents. While the Kenyan area is known for some of the most naturally beautiful sites in Africa like Mount Kenya and Lake Victoria. However, deep in the cities of the populations in this country, there are health problems that are taking the lives of children on a regular basis. Lack of appropriate medical care, medications, and even clean drinking water have made it difficult to control some pediatric illnesses. Take a look at some of the most concerning health issues among children in Kenya:

Malnutrition

Poverty is a huge problem in many of Kenya's poorest regions, so it is not uncommon for children to rely only on aid brought into the villages by outside sources for food. Children in these regions suffer severely because they are not getting enough nourishment to properly grow. It is estimated that roughly a third of the youngest children in Kenya are underweight or underheight because of the lack of good food supplies.

HIV/AIDS

Kenya is one of the most widely affected locations in the world that is facing an HIV/AIDS epidemic with as many as 62,000 new HIV diagnoses in 2016. These cases include both adults and children who have been affected by the disease, but children often get a double whammy with the health crisis because many have parents who are either very ill or no longer alive. While great strides have been taken to improve the problem, HIV and AIDS are still a primary health threat in Kenya.

Malaria

There is a great risk of malaria in Kenya no matter the time of year because of the high numbers of mosquitoes and the the elevated levels of Plasmodium parasites in water sources and among infected individuals. Pregnant women and children are most vulnerable to this disease, which can cause everything from gastrointestinal issues to blood loss and death without the right kind of treatment.

There are numerous programs available that accept donations that go fully to help the health problems facing the youth in Kenya. These proceeds are collected and used toward providing medications in poverty-stricken areas, paying medical providers to offer services in Kenyan cities, and even to help combat problems with mosquito populations, lack of sexual protection, and lack of care facilities.
